Truth

Foundational

Canonical Definition

An intelligent environment represents itself and its state accurately — to its occupants, its caretakers, and its own records.

Purpose

Truth exists to prevent environments from misrepresenting themselves, their capabilities, their state, their actions, or their history. Without Truth, other framework layers cannot operate reliably because people, systems, and caretakers cannot confidently understand what is actually occurring.

Evidence Sources

Documented evidence associated with this principle will appear here after evaluation through the framework governance process.

Evidence records will identify their originating context, known limitations, governance decision, and resulting framework status.

Refinements

No post-publication refinements have been recorded.

This principle entered the framework as part of the initial canonical publication, Framework v1.0.

Open Questions

  • What level of uncertainty should an environment disclose when its understanding of state is inferred rather than directly observed?
  • How should conflicting sources of truth be reconciled?
  • What records are necessary to explain historical behavior?

Framework Specification v1.0 remains the authoritative source for this principle. Evidence, refinements, challenges, and framework changes are governed through the published Behaves Well Framework governance and evidence process.

02

Identity

Foundational

Canonical Definition

An intelligent environment knows who is present and acts in accordance with that knowledge — distinguishing between occupants, caretakers, and visitors.

Purpose

Identity exists to establish who is present, who is affected, who is authorized, and who is responsible. Without Identity, environments cannot provide appropriate experiences, protect privacy, enforce permissions, or tailor behavior to context.

Refinements

No post-publication refinements have been recorded.

This principle entered the framework as part of the initial canonical publication, Framework v1.0.

Open Questions

  • How should an environment behave when identity is uncertain, conflicting, shared, anonymous, or intentionally withheld?
  • When may an environment act on inferred identity?
  • How should consent and privacy constrain identity-driven behavior?

Framework Specification v1.0 remains the authoritative source for this principle. Evidence, refinements, challenges, and framework changes are governed through the published Behaves Well Framework governance and evidence process.

03

Operational Trust

Foundational

Canonical Definition

An intelligent environment behaves consistently and predictably — its actions are explainable, its failures are disclosed, and its behavior does not surprise those who depend on it.

Purpose

Operational Trust exists to ensure behavior remains understandable, predictable, explainable, and dependable. Without Operational Trust, intelligent environments create confusion, uncertainty, and loss of confidence.

No post-publication refinements have been recorded.

This principle entered the framework as part of the initial canonical publication, Framework v1.0.

Open Questions

  • What degree of predictability is appropriate for adaptive systems?
  • When must behavioral changes be disclosed in advance?
  • How should an environment communicate degraded operation or partial failure?

Framework Specification v1.0 remains the authoritative source for this principle. Evidence, refinements, challenges, and framework changes are governed through the published Behaves Well Framework governance and evidence process.

04

Stewardship

Foundational

Canonical Definition

An intelligent environment is maintained with care and accountability — its caretakers are identifiable, their responsibilities are defined, and the environment is not left without responsible oversight.

Purpose

Stewardship exists to ensure that environments, assets, services, and obligations remain under accountable care. Without Stewardship, ownership becomes unclear, responsibilities become neglected, and systems become difficult to govern.

Refinements

No post-publication refinements have been recorded.

This principle entered the framework as part of the initial canonical publication, Framework v1.0.

Open Questions

  • How should overlapping or conflicting caretaker responsibilities be resolved?
  • What stewardship responsibilities may be delegated?
  • Under what conditions may an automated agent act as a caretaker?

Framework Specification v1.0 remains the authoritative source for this principle. Evidence, refinements, challenges, and framework changes are governed through the published Behaves Well Framework governance and evidence process.

05

Continuity

Foundational

Canonical Definition

An intelligent environment preserves context and history across time — it does not forget, does not lose state without disclosure, and supports the transfer of knowledge between caretakers.

Purpose

Continuity exists to preserve context, history, state, and knowledge across time. Without Continuity, learning is lost, transitions become disruptive, and environments repeatedly recreate the same problems.

  • How should continuity be balanced with privacy and data minimization?

Framework Specification v1.0 remains the authoritative source for this principle. Evidence, refinements, challenges, and framework changes are governed through the published Behaves Well Framework governance and evidence process.

06

Concierge

Emerged from Residential Research

Canonical Definition

An intelligent environment anticipates and serves the needs of those within it — proactively, without requiring explicit instruction, and within the boundaries of its defined role.

Purpose

Concierge exists to enable proactive service within defined boundaries. It represents the environment's ability to anticipate needs, reduce effort, and support people without requiring constant instruction while remaining accountable to stewardship and trust constraints.

Evidence records will identify their originating context, known limitations, governance decision, and resulting framework status.

Concierge originated from the founding residential body of work represented by Homes That Behave Well. A formal evidence record documenting that emergence is forthcoming.

Refinements

No post-publication refinements have been recorded.

Concierge entered Framework v1.0 with the status Emerged from Residential Research.

Open Questions

  • Which proactive actions require authorization, notification, confirmation, or explanation?
  • How should an environment distinguish between helpful service and intrusive behavior?
  • Does Concierge represent a universal framework layer or a contextual capability that varies by domain?

Framework Specification v1.0 remains the authoritative source for this principle. Evidence, refinements, challenges, and framework changes are governed through the published Behaves Well Framework governance and evidence process.
